Go back to the Review Flashcards tab, tap on "Test type" and select "Fill-in-the-blanks. In this type of flashcard test, instead of just remembering the word, you actually have to enter its Pinyin using an onscreen keyboard. Use the buttons below the keyboard to enter tones.
Once you enter a tone in the last box, the system will automatically grade your answer:. If you've purchased the Handwriting Recognizer add-on, you can also perform a fill-in-the-blanks test on headword characters using Pleco's handwriting recognizer; just set "Prompt for" to "Characters" in "Review Flashcards.
Draw the character in the large blue box, then tap on the correct character in the row of choices on the bottom of the screen, or tap on the screen with two fingers to clear your input if the first of those choices was correct.
If none of the choices are correct, tap on the Backspace button to clear your input and try again. Once you've filled in all of the boxes, the system will automatically grade your answer correct or incorrect. Pleco ships with a built-in list of HSK flashcards that you can install with a single button tap - in a few months we'll be rolling out a lot more of them, but for now, to install that list tap on "Install Cards" in the main flashcard system screen to get this message:.
This should only take a minute or so - if it seems like it's taking a lot longer than that, stop don't worry, it won't create duplicate cards if you try again later , then power your Android device completely off and on again hold down the power button and try again. To download files from your iPhone, click on the appropriate links under "Download Files. An interesting little note: while it hasn't been specifically designed for it, this system can also be used to share Pleco document files between iPhones, assuming you've got two of them connected to the same WiFi network.
To do this, activate the built-in web server on the iPhone you want to download from , making sure to turn on Enable Downloads, then type in the Local address in the Pleco web browser on the iPhone you're downloading to. That will allow you to transfer files from one iPhone to the other by tapping on the appropriate link in the web browser.
You can move, rename, and delete documents in Pleco's document browser much like on a regular computer. Tap on the button to the right of a document or folder's name to bring up this screen:. To rename the document, simply change the name listed at the top of the screen. Tap the Done button to save your changes. For text files that have been opened at least once, this screen also includes a separate Bookmarks and Settings section. Tap on the Text Encoding button to change the text encoding system Pleco uses to interpret Chinese characters in the file; you'll also be prompted to select an encoding the first time you open the file if Pleco can't detect the encoding automatically.
Tap on Clear All to clear all of your bookmarks and your saved Text Encoding setting. Tap on the destination folder to move the files into that folder, or tap "Cancel" to cancel the move. With a harware button, this will appear at the bottom of the screen a bit, and may look a bit different, but will contain the same set of 6 options. You can use this bar to jump between different sections of Pleco. The row of buttons below the search bar lets you choose between different ways of inputting text into Pleco - the brush is for handwriting input paid add-on , the puzzle piece is for radical input free , the keyboard for keyboard input obviously free and the microphone for voice recognition also free but requires a network connection.
If you've downloaded the OCR add-on you'll also see a fifth button with a camera icon that you can use to access that. Make sure that the keyboard is selected, then type "nihao" on the keyboard to search for "nihao" in Pinyin:. Characters in dictionary headwords are colored based on their Mandarin tone; red for first tone flat , green for second tone rising , blue for third tone falling-rising , purple for fourth tone falling , and gray for the "neutral" fifth tone.
You can disable this tone-coloring feature or change the colors it uses in the "Tone Colors" section of the General settings panel. Tap on your device's back button to return to the main dictionary screen. On most devices, that's the arrow at the bottom left corner of the screen as in the screenshot above - on some devices it may be a hardware button below the screen, but will probably have some sort of left-facing arrow icon.

Tap on a bookmark to jump to its saved location, or tap on a folder to view bookmarks inside of that folder. To create a new bookmark folder, tap on the New Folder button at the bottom left corner of the screen. Tap on a character to look it up, just as in any other type of document the reader supports. The same Popup Definition interface will appear. The toolbar buttons at the top of the screen are similar to their Document Viewer equivalents:. Drag your finger along the bar at the bottom of the screen to efficiently scroll through the entire document.
The rightmost toolbar option glasses attempts to extract the plain text of this web page and bring it up in a separate Document Viewer screen.
Tap on New Folder at the bottom of the screen to create a new folder, or New File to create a new, empty text file which you can then open and edit in the document reader.
